It’s a strange and wonderful feeling when virtually all one’s senses are stimulated simultaneously, the experience of a massage being elevated to something almost otherworldly.
Imagine smooth hot river stones gliding across your skin like a sled floating over virgin snowfall, the perfume of essential oils wafting around you like a fragrant halo, hypnotic music lulling you into a deep enraptured state. Add the healing hands of a therapist who proficiently tunes your body like a piano
— rejuvenating, relaxing, restorative — and you just feel, well… renewed.
Okay, I know it sounds a bit over-the-top, a little Fifty Shades of Grey even… but who among us doesn’t crave that sort of transformative respite from the outside world? Even if that outside world happens to be the kaleidoscopic Caribbean flanked by the silky sands of one of the planet’s most famous beaches? And who among us wouldn’t want to share that halcyon experience with a partner?
Ah, you say! That sounds quite alluring. As it should. And as it is. Small and chic, the sequestered spa at Mi Amor Boutique Hotel — one of the exclusive Colibri family of hostelries — proffers not only distinctively designed treatments, but an intimate alternative to the sometimes hectic environment of larger facilities.
And while this 18 room “Small Luxury Hotel Of The World” (and annual Trip Advisor “Certificate Of Excellence” recipient) is favored by couples seeking laid back elegance, the Spa is prized by all — even we single folk — who appreciate meticulously curated and skillfully executed spa treatments in a tranquil private setting.
Seriously… my customized Hot Stone/Deep Tissue aromatic massage was one of the best I’ve had, leaving me with a muddled mind and jellified body for hours after. Which is a good thing in my book. Although I didn’t partake, a rose-petalled Jacuzzi was at the ready for a serene soak.
Japanese-inspired sliders open to create a unified space for romantic Couples’ treatments, and personalized essential oils are selected by the practitioner based on intuitive knowledge of each client’s physical/spiritual/emotional need. I was anointed with lemongrass “to open me up to receiving the massage” and peppermint to combat my slight congestion.
A calming cup of Jasmine/lemongrass herbal tea awaited me after the session… and even that indicated the spa’s commitment to detail. No ordinary teabag this was, but rather a little screened pyramid embellished with a tiny mint leaf. Imported, of course.
In addition to the massage menu (“Welcome” Hot Stone; Swedish with Crystals; Lymphatic Drainage; Reflexology; Deep Tissue), the spa offers Facial and Body Treatments, Healing Baths, Four Element Rituals (Air Ritual to Flow; Water Ritual to Cleanse; Fire Ritual to Activate; Earth Ritual to Ground), and of course Romance Couples Packages which include Rose Quartz Massage (for the Heart Chakra) and flower-infused bath; Chocolate Mud Wrap/Massage/Orange/Vanilla Bath; or a Coffee Exfoliation/Hot Stone Massage/Flower Bath combo… all enhanced by champagne and candlelight.
When all is said and done, the only problem I had with this spa experience… is that it ended.
